To celebrate the nationwide release of the film “Michael” in Japan today (June 12, 2026), we asked Steve to answer two questions about “Human Nature”! Whether you’re planning to see the movie or have already seen it, this is a must-read.

Q.The film “Michael” is finally set for nationwide release in Japan on June 12 2026, so your fans are excitedly imagining how “Human Nature” is featured in the movie. Could you give a message (without spoilers) to those fans?

Steve : When I went to the screening of “Michael”, I had no idea how Human Nature would be used if at all. At one point earlier in the movie, the underscore seemed to hint at the melody of Human Nature and I thought maybe that’s it but without spoiling it, I can say I was very wrong and that Human Nature does appear in a very prominent way at a very prominent part of the movie. I was very happy.

(Japanese Translation : 『Michael／マイケル』の試写会に行った時、僕は「Human Nature」がどう使われるのか、そもそも使われるのかさえ全く予想していなかったんだよ。映画の序盤で、BGMが「Human Nature」のメロディーをほのめかしているように感じられて「もしかするとこれかな」と思ったんだけど、ネタバレを避けて言うと僕の予想は大外れだった。「Human Nature」は、映画の非常に重要な場面で、非常に際立った形で登場するよ。僕は本当にうれしかった。）

Q2.To commemorate “Michael”‘s release, the official music video for “Human Nature” was produced 43 years after the single was released. What did you think of it? Did you like the video?

Steve : I just watched it now, so that I could answer your question. I hadn’t seen it yet. Of course I’m absolutely thrilled with all the attention the song is getting now. It’s a tribute first and foremost to Michael, but also to everyone who worked on it with a special nod to my cowriter John Bettis and of course Quincy, Bruce Swedien and all the musicians who worked on it especially my brothers in Toto. I will say is It really makes me miss him. There was so much more for such a gifted artist like him to do.
