Q1. TOTO music has essences of many genres…Rock, Soul, Progressive through World Music, it’s very unique and attractive point. Music fans in Japan categorize TOTO as AOR/Adult Contemporary Rock over the decades. Lately people have been calling sophisticated music like TOTO as Yacht Rock, what do you think about that?
Steve: While Toto definitely fits into the “Yacht Rock” category – which, as I understand it is defined as AOR that definitely has Jazz tendencies harmonically and R&B tendencies rhythmically. Really, the perfect Toto Yacht Rock song would be “George Porgy”. BUT as our true fans know, we go we beyond those narrow definitions often.
Q2. You have played on various Yacht Rock records over the years, if you pick one as your favorite, which one would it be?
Steve: Probably Georgy Porgy
Q3. You’re a great composer and you’re also working on a new album. Does the Yacht Rock movement influence that?
Steve: Only that I think all this attention can only benefit me. If you like Yacht Rock, you’re probably going to like my music. Don’t you think?
